As the college application season nears, students start to become more interested in small details regarding their applications useful content. Firstly, let’s define SAT superscoring. College Board blog explains that, according to policy, you are allowed to use your best sectional scores even if the tests were from different dates. Or, to put it another way, colleges take their highest sectional scores across multiple testing dates, and combine them into a single, higher composite. If, for example, a December 2023 test score of 700 points was achieved for Reading & Writing while 750 were scored for Math, a March 2024 test would result in the opposite, 750 being awarded for Reading & Writing but 700 for Math.

The student will submit their scores for both dates of the test, and then the college will calculate the student’s score total as 1500. They will combine the student’s highest scores on each section (750 on Reading & Writing 750 Math). This allows students to get back points that they may have missed in certain sections and gives them every opportunity to do their best on college applications.

What can change this tradition? College Board has announced that it will start digitalizing the SAT in 2023. In March 2024 the test was fully digitalized worldwide. The goal is to offer students greater flexibility and accessibility by taking the test via computer. The shift also brought shorter testing time and more accessible question formats to help ease the test-taking burden for students. This format change raises the inevitable issue of whether superscoring is allowed between the two versions.
